John Berry (cricketer)

John Berry (10 January 1823 – 26 February 1895) was an English first-class cricketer, who played eighteen matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and others in a long career, which lasted 28 years from 1849 to 1867.〔
Born in Dalton, Huddersfield, Berry was a right-handed batsman and medium pace round arm bowler. In total, he scored 1,069 first-class runs at 14.06, with a top score of 78 against Kent, and another score of 51 against an All England XI. He took 40 wickets at 10.62, with a best of 6 for 31 against Surrey.
He played nineteen times for Yorkshire when they were still a pre county club, and eighteen when formal county status had been achieved. He also played a match for Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire, one for England, four for the North of England, three for Sheffield and one for Yorkshire with Stockton-on-Tees. All these games had first-class status.
Berry died in February 1895 in Haslingden, Lancashire, aged 72 years. His uncle, G. Berry, also played first-class cricket.
